Kumi Uri – Support for People Living with Atopic Dermatitis

Some people are handed hardship and survive it. Others transform hardship into a force for growth. This is our path as parents.

In 1994, our daughter was born. Shortly after her birth, a rash appeared on her skin and spread relentlessly. Her condition deteriorated rapidly. She was hospitalized repeatedly, while doctors struggled for a long time to diagnose and stabilize her illness. Constant itching, worsening skin, and declining health turned a young child’s life into daily pain.

We refused to surrender. Our search for answers led us across continents, including the United States, Germany, France, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. We pursued conventional medicine as well as alternative approaches, learning often painfully to distinguish evidence-based care from empty promises.

From this journey, a deeper calling emerged. As her mother, shaped by lived experience, I chose to move beyond coping and to become a professional advocate. I trained as a psychotherapist (M.A.) and later qualified through EUPATI, the European Patients’ Academy on Therapeutic Innovation, with a focus on patient involvement in medical research.

This unique combination of personal experience and professional training allowed me to bridge the gap between patients and physicians, families and researchers, lived reality and scientific progress. I began supporting other families affected by atopic dermatitis with clarity, practical tools, and partnership.

Kumi Uri was founded so that families no longer have to walk this path alone. What began as one family’s struggle became a shared mission to turn pain into knowledge and experience into light.

ATOPIC DERMATITIS – MORE THAN A SKIN CONDITION

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by severe itching, dry skin, and recurring flare ups. It affects sleep, daily life, and the social lives of children, adults, and entire families. Many people affected experience exhaustion, insecurity, and a lack of understanding. This is exactly where Kumi Uri comes in.
